Life in the SLO lane. After 16 years in Minneapolis, where I become an avid runner, I moved to the California Central Coast. I'm 67 and have been running since I was 50. I've finished 10 marathons, with a 5:49 PR. Aways trying to get faster.

I went for a run with Baby New Year
...and came back feeling like Father Time.
First run of the New Year! My friend Marcia organized a buddy run for tonight and several people showed up. We met at 6 p.m. and headed out for a 5-mile run. The weather was a balmy 38 degrees, and although there was some ice, the path was mostly clear.
I started out strong and able to keep up with the others, but by the second mile I was starting to flag. Some people turned around at mile 2 and I was tempted to go back with them, but it was only laziness that made me want to go back. I knew I was capable of 5 miles. Rick ran with me on the way back; he's way faster than me but is recovering from that pesky plantar fasciitis so I don't think he minded going slow and taking walk breaks. And I was grateful for his company, as well as Coach Gary, who ran with me on the way out.
Last night I was all set to go running but when I got to the gym discovered that I was missing a vital piece of running gear--my sports bra--so I jumped in the pool instead. It's been years since I've swum laps, but I wanted to get some kind of exercise in. I swam slowly (there's a surprise) but stayed in the pool for almost 30 minutes. My goal was to swim 15 laps, but the pool was getting crowded and that intimidated me so I stopped at 13. I actually got a cramp in my foot while in the deep end so all I could do was keep swimming until I could stand up. That was weird. I'm just glad I wasn't in the middle of a lake when it happened. Swimming was OK, but I'm not signing up for any triathlon's.
Both the swimming yesterday and the running today made my back hurt. I think that means I need to strengthen my muscles, but where? And how? I stretched after tonight's run, but didn't feel human until I came home and took a shower. I was pretty stiff.
Oh, and I'm still off the sugar--three weeks yesterday. I can't say I feel much better, and I'm certainly not slimmer, but it needed to be done. Unfortunately I've compensated for the lack of sucrose by adding starch, so there goes the 500 calories a day deficit I was trying to create. Eating healthy is hard work!

Wow, off sugar for 3 weeks...wish I could do that!! And good job on pushing for the 5 miles.
I appreciate the suggestions for the running groups you made, biggest problem I think is that I don't necessarily want a "training program" set for me by someone else. I have one I'm going to follow, would just like to meet some new people and on occasion go for runs...I'm definitely game for meeting for breakfast sometime, and I don't mind running with those slower than me on occasion.
Three weeks without sugar is quite a feat. You should be proud. Way to hang in there and finish the 5 miles even though your head thought you should stop.
3 weeks -you are my hero. Eating healthy is hard work! It can be more expensive too.
good for you getting five miles in! i haven't been able to get up that far yet!
me too off sugar for i think 3 weeks! and me too...yumm starch! starch, unfortunately, is a sugar. more apples!
It's been great seeing you this week, Dorine! Keep on running! See you Saturday for another run!
Good job on the off sugar thing! As for your back, I think you probably need to strengthen your core. It is said that most back pain comes from a weak core. There's lots of ways to strengthen the core - weight lifting, crunches (done correctly) and my personal favorite, Pilates. The good thing about Pilates is it works the entire core, not just the abs. There is focus on the obliques (the muscles over the ribs), the pelvic floor, the muscles of the low back, the muscles between the shoulders, the trapiezius (I'm supposed to know the names of all of these, and I think I did for about 30 minutes during the test, but not any longer!)
Okay, enough of my Pilates plug. Keep up the healthy eating and pushing those miles!
Keep at it, you have a very good thing going!
Awesome job, Dori!
I like to run in that kind of atmosphere, in this period there is always something "of magic". Maybe the lights in the dark, the people, the winter and the Christmas time....
WTG for getting rid of sugar, you are a brave soul.
Sounds like a cool run with the group--with the operative word being "cool..."
I am just trying to figure out the best plan for me, so I'm asking RBFers that I respect...can I ask what your R/W ratio is, if you have a set one?
Hope your back feels better after a little rest... Have a great 2007!
Good on ya for getting rid of sugar. I'm working up to doing the same thing myself, but I find it incredibly difficult.
Love the new design, by the way. Take care and have a happy and healthy year in 2007.
Kudos to you!
