Life in the SLO lane. After 16 years in Minneapolis, where I become an avid runner, I moved to the California Central Coast. I'm 67 and have been running since I was 50. I've finished 10 marathons, with a 5:49 PR. Aways trying to get faster.

Lead me not into temptation
...for I can find the way myself.
I haven't had any sucrose for three days. I should say candy or cookies, because I had a scone at Starbucks and although I consider that bread it did have icing (and as SD pointed out, it's probably loaded with sugar.) The fact that I've been counting is an indication of how (surprisingly) difficult this has been. On Tuesday (day 1) I ate 2 bananas trying to keep from eating chocolate. I'm all about instant gratification. Yesterday I only had one banana. Today was easier--no bananas and at a work-related dinner tonight I passed on dessert. That was hard to do, but then I made the waitress take my plate away so I wouldn't be tempted to nibble.
The holidays are certainly not the time to diet, but I'm so tired of gaining weight. I want to be a size 6 again. Plods inspired me--she's lost 23 pounds. I don't know how long I can keep this up, but I'm trying not to break the cycle. It will be worth it if it helps me run faster.
Speaking of running, I have been, but not very much and not for very long. I had a nice run in Chicago along the lakefront on Thanksgiving morning. The weather was great. Last week in California I only ran once, and it was for less than an hour, but it felt good to be out there. This week, even though the weather has been unseasonably warm (for Minnesota), I ran on the dreadmill at the gym. On Tuesday I did 5K and last night I did a hill workout for an hour--while watching "The Biggest Loser" on the TV. That provided some motivation! :-)

Great opening line! It made me laugh.
Habits are the hardest thing to break and the hardest thing to develope.
Good news is, it can be done.
Size 6?
That's some goal. Don't think I've ever been a 6, not even in 6th grade.
LOL
Our bodies are wonderful and do reward us for our efforts.
What we eat plays such a big role in how we feel and preform as athletes.
I know you can reach your goal!
Keep making good choices~~
But don't forget to enjoy the "good" food the holiday brings :)
It's a tough time to get workouts in and diet. Kudos to you.
Good for you - avoiding empty (but tasty) sugars. That's healthful on so many levels.
You mention counting; I'm a lifetime member of Weight Watchers and love that program. I count, it works, and it fits in perfectly with an active lifestyle. I lost 45 pounds and keep it off.
I read somewhere (RW?) that for every 1% of weight a runner loses, s/he gets 1% faster. Keep at it!
Dieting during the holidays is a huge challenge. I just ate most of a jar of those chex muddy-buddy things that one of the preschoolers gave me. Yum and ugh!
Dieting and the holidays are really tricky. It is important to be realistic in your goals and allow for some room.
The weather has been AWESOME. I will love to have it stay until 12/23 (next Saturday). :D
I'm trying, too! Trying hard not to focus on sizes or even weight loss, but more on fitness. So to start, I'm working on just one thing: avoiding sugar, which is freakin' HARD! Today at the hairdressers, they had free cookies and chocolate kisses, and I ALMOST went for it, but then stopped. It's just second nature to grab free goodies. I had to literally remind myself not to bother.
So, 8 days sugarless (as much as possible); we'll see how long I can keep it up!
And my running has been pretty sporadic, too, to say the least. Hey at least we're thinking about it, right? more than most people do this time of year!
I am with backofthepack: dieting during the holidays is a huge challenge. I have just put on 3 lbs!
Good luck on your weight loss goals. Cool story on your Hollywood apartment. Bet that was neat to visit again. Keep on running...
Good luck on avoiding the sucrose...I'm a sugarholic myself and know how tough it can be. Particularly after a meal. I managed to avoid the brownies and cookies at my parttime job over the weekend though. I am trying to lose about 5 pounds myself, depending on the day (scale keeps jumping) so can feel that pain of trying to watch things and trying to lose. I am hopeful it will speed me up as well. Looks like it's going to be up near 40 again tomorrow!!
