Treadmill Tuesday

I'm getting soft. I didn't want to run outside today because it was too cold when really, it wasn't all that cold. Regardless, I thought I'd be running alone, so opted for some indoor training.

It turned out my running partner, Bunny, met me at the gym and we did intervals on the treadmill. Since she's so much faster than me, it's a good way for us to do speed work together. We warmed up for a mile, then started out with 4x400 meters, with 1.5 minute intervals. It wasn't an exact science, meaning the intervals may have gone for two minutes, but you get the idea. I set the incline to 1.5 and the pace to 10:30. Usually when I'm on the dreadmill, 13 minute miles feels hard, so I figured 10:30 would really be a challenge.

It wasn't. We extended the repeats to 6, then 8. I was starting to wear down by the end. I couldn't understand why I was able to run so fast and figured it was the fact that Bunny was on the treadmill next to me. Then I remembered that I had a Grande latte and a cup of coffee before my workout. So maybe it was the caffeine. I normally don't drink coffee before a run because I read it dehydrates you, but maybe I should go to Starbucks before my next marathon. I hear there might be one in Seattle. :-)

Coffee really doesn't really dehydrate you. It just makes you zippy!

Well, you know, my favorite half-way treat is a can of Starbucks double-shot. Works good when there are drop bags, kind of a pain when I have to carry it. And lately, it's been paired with a burrito. How strange is that? I think it picks you up though! It's awesome that you cranked out those miles - keep it up!

Wow.. even in CA it is so cold that folks are choosing indoor training?! Remember MN? It has been below freezing here for over a month now. .. and sometimes below zero for days.

The idea that coffee dehydrates may be an urban legend .. perhaps it is only a stimulant .. that gets a person to the porta potty a little sooner.
Congratulations on the good workout.
