Open Up That Golden Gate

Here's a picture of the house I'm moving out of, taken this morning.

The men are finishing packing and loading up the truck as I write this. They spent all day yesterday packing but didn’t finish. Take my unsolicited advice and don’t accumulate stuff. I really hope I learned my lesson; I’ve been throwing away running magazines from three years ago and performance reviews from thirty years ago (!) all week. We’ve had four garage sales and I’ve actually gotten quite good at it. We’ve made several trips to Goodwill, gave stuff away and threw away even more.

Life has been so hectic lately that I haven’t had time to be sad. My good friend Paula came over a couple of times to help me sort what goes and what stays and we had a tearful goodbye. It’s very difficult for me to say goodbye, although I know that I will remain friends with Paula and some others forever. I stopped by Starbucks today and said goodbye to some of the regulars. It’s weird to know that you’ll never see some people again when they’ve been a part of your life for so long.

My house hasn’t sold yet, but I won’t be staying here any longer and that’s a strange feeling. When I first saw this house sixteen years ago I didn’t like it but it grew on me. And I knew this was the neighborhood I wanted to live in. We had moved here from Southern California and I loved the house I lived in there and wondered if I would feel the same about this one. I do. We have remodeled extensively, so there’s a lot of me in it. This is also the longest I've ever lived in the same house.

But as much as I’ve enjoyed living in Minneapolis, I’m a Californian at heart and I truly feel like I’m going home. The move is easier because I know what I’m getting into. I’ve stayed in my new house several times and I know the area. I even found a running group, although I’ve yet to run with them so I don't know if there's anyone who runs at my speed.

SD and I bought a pickup truck and we’re driving back to California. We’ll stop in Wichita, Santa Fe, and Las Vegas and should be in our new place by Thanksgiving. Of course, the moving van won’t be there yet so we’ll have Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant with my parents. I’m hoping the van will arrive by Friday. I’ve reconnected with a former roommate and she’s going to be visiting family in my area for the weekend, so I’m planning to see her.

California, here I come!

Hi Dori! I heard from MML, AmyB and Gary you were leaving. It won't be the same without you. You are such an inspiration. However, MML, Cheryl and I still have plans to get out to see you and do that Nike Half in 2008! We will deeply miss you in MN but you will love your new home in California.

oops not mml, I meant MMDI! She's at it again by the way, pushing for NY Marathon in 2009 - so watch out! :)

Post us a picture of your new house too! Moving is hard, yet...exciting. New beginnings, new places, new people. Have a great trip!

Dori:

I have been in complete denial that you were actually going to leave.

I fully expected to see you last Saturday at the club getting ready to go out for a very chilly but beautiful run....

Nope.

The Chicago Marathoners (including Nat above) got together for a "race recap" dinner and I asked about you and MMDI told me you were on the road.

AAARRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH!

I'm going to miss you very much.

We'll be connected in the blogosphere, but it will be different and I'm secretly, selfishly sad about your leaving.

I know you will be happy and that CA is where you want to be, so good for you on that front.

You never know. The running girls may get me to participate in that 1/2 next year.

Stranger things have happened....

I probably shouldn't "argue" on your comment blog, but it wasn't MY idea to plant the NY Marathon 2009 seeds - it was Mary K's idea. All I said was that it would fit with my goals!

I'm so selfishly sad that you're off to California as I loved seeing and running with you on an ongoing basis. I'm not used to friends moving away from Minnesota (as Minnesotans tend to stay in Minnesota). I know we'll stay in touch but it will be different.

And I'm already longing for my Tiffany bling from the Women's Nike Half Marathon. We will definitely be in California in the fall. And the MN contingent for this half marathon is growing!

I miss you tons already but I know the next phase of your life will be filled with fascinating and interesting journeys. I can't wait to hear about them!

Hi Dorine,

I will miss you too. I really enjoyed our runs together, especially your 20 miler during training and our last river run. I am excited for you and looking forward to staying in tough. I think it was me that said, "let's do NYC in 2009" (I also take responsibility for Chicago), so think about that and I would love some Tiffany bling to add to my collection next Fall. Take Care.

Ah...I wish I had had a chance to get to know you while you lived here! That house looks so familiar...what area is it in? I'm jealous of your going to the warm weather!

Goodbye Dori. Since my father's side of the family came from MN (Winona) and I have a sister there in St. Paul, I feel like you're leaving an area I know and love. I don't know anything about CA beyond it has nice weather and beautiful people. But it's always special to go back home so good luck to you out there!
