Even hardy Minnesota runners have their limits. With temps in the -10 F range, and wind chills over 30 below, the coaches are begging us to stay inside:
Please don't prove how tough you are and attempt an outdoor workout. Most of you have finished multiple marathons so I know how tough you are! This is a safety issue and safety is always our first consideration.
There are some runners here (though not of the smarter sex), who try to prove their toughness by dressing unsuitably for the cold. I've seen guys wear shorts and no shirts in mid-winter races. Here's a tip guys: Women don't look at you and think, "What a man!" Just the opposite.
My coach claims that the foam in our running shoes actually freezes in sub-zero temps and offers no cushioning or support. And I know from personal experience that Clif Bloks become "cement blocks."
I haven't worked out all week, indoors or out. I have been sleeping alot, and watching a lot of movies. My friend's kids lent me Mary Poppins, and I watched it on Thursday for the first time since I was ten. I still enjoyed it.
My friend Kathy brought me all sorts of comfort food on Wednesday: applesauce, white bread, popsicles, frozen waffles, bananas, and jello. Usually I eat whole grains and avoid highly processed food. I haven't had jello since I was a kid, but she said that bland food was the best kind for my stomach right now. She also made some white rice with a little bit of broth. What really impressed me is that she bought all sugar-free and low-fat. It's been sustaining me all week, although my weight is down by 5 pounds since last Saturday. I know it will go up as I start eating again.
On another note, Sunday is Jessica's debut as a race director. Go give her some encouragement, if you haven't already.
One last thing. My layout blew up the other day after my last post. I didn't touch any of the code, but it's pretty messed up in IE. It displays fine in Firefox. If any of you have any suggestions on what I can do, I'd appreciate it.

We've had a week of steady snow and this weekend blowing snow. I'm pretty tough, but I'm tired of fighting for footing. Last night I went indoors. Today I'm resting! I can't face the snow. I'm also shopping for snowshoes on eBay.
My TNT alumni had a group run today. Personally I think they are ALL nuts!! Stay warm!
Gosh, Dori, I hope you feel better soon. Sounds like you've got it bad. That weather sounds nasty - bet you'll be glad to move!
Take care and I hope you feel better soon. Which is the smarter sex (perhaps this question....is also an answer)?
sounds like what ever hit you really hit you.
Sorry you've been so down and out the last week.
Hope you feel better soon and that the weather warms up a bit so we can go back outside!
I'm praying for warmer weather and I'm vacationing in FL from Feb 9 to 18th. Balmy weather, here I come!!!
ba ba ba burrrrrrr... Glad to hear your stomach crud is going away. Sounds like weather that requires skates or an auger and a fishing pole.
Yes, per your question on your comments on my recent posting that's me in the bottom picture. I'm sporting my ultra haircut which is something I started doing with Rob before long runs like this.
Have a great week of running! Even if it's on a treadmill!
Eric
You're right, it is too damn cold.
I know 21st Century Mom was having trouble with her layout in Firefox and IE recently. Maybe she has some advice.
sometimes it just IS too cold and we have to accept it. and sometimes we're just TOO sick! what a lovely friend you have to do all that for you!
Take care of yourself. The only good thing about the weather is that it must end sometime
I was one of the dummies on Sunday...but I wore lots and lots of clothes and was comfortable. It was probably no better or worse on Sunday than it had been Saturday and I was only out for 45 minutes...:)
Ah comfort foods. Honestly I LOVE jello, sugar free kind is all I eat, I try to have some always made up as it's a great little sweet something after a meal and almost no calories!!
I need a friend like Kathy! That was very sweet of her to bring you all tha comfort food. The stomach thing is really running a muck, isn't it? I hope you're feeling better. And that was too frickin' cold to be running!
Take care.
